Joan Monfort, the photographer behind the iconic 2007 photograph of Lionel Messi bathing a baby Lamine Yamal, has spoken publicly ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The match, set for July 19, 2026, will see Spain face Argentina, bringing together the two players on opposing sides in what is being described as a historic on-pitch meeting.
Monfort Reflects on the Prophetic Image
In an interview with FIFA, Monfort described the image as a miracle that continues to carry profound significance nearly two decades later. “It was no coincidence, it was a miracle. Messi was 19 and even shyer and more introverted back then,” Monfort said. He added that the photograph feels like history written before it happened, and its emotional weight has only grown with time.
“That photo is etched in my soul. It was a miracle back then and continues to be 20 years on. It was like writing history before it happened. Nobody could have imagined that things would pan out as they have…” Monfort stated.
A Belief in Something Greater
Monfort’s reflection extended beyond football, touching on a sense of the unexplainable. “I'm starting to believe that there's something greater than us out there. I don't know what it is or where it comes from, but there has to be something because the way things have fallen into place is unexplainable and magical,” he concluded.
The image resurfaced widely after Spain and Argentina secured their places in the final, drawing renewed attention to the coincidence that connects both players. Barcelona had previously shared the backstory of how the photograph came to exist in 2007, but neither Messi nor Yamal has made any public statement about it.
UNICEF Confirms Authenticity
Legit.ng previously reported that UNICEF confirmed the viral photos of Lionel Messi bathing baby Lamine Yamal are real, taken in 2007. This confirmation came amid online doubts, with some claiming the images were AI-generated to craft a perfect narrative for the rising star.
