Popular Nigerian singer Adekunle Kosoko, known professionally as Adekunle Gold, has made a last-minute cancellation of his headline performance at the Music Central Fest. The artist cited the event organisers' failure to fulfil key contractual obligations as the reason for his withdrawal.
Last-Minute Announcement on Final Festival Day
The singer broke the news directly to his fans on Saturday, December 20, 2025, which was the final day of the two-day festival held at Orange Island in Lekki, Lagos. Using his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Adekunle Gold stated he would not be taking the stage.
"I won't be performing at Music City Central today," he wrote. "Unfortunately, due to the organisers not meeting key agreed obligations and the event not being in a state that allows us deliver the kind of show you deserve, we can't proceed."
He expressed understanding for fans who had made plans to see him and thanked them for their continued support. The artist also directed everyone to his official channels for any further updates.
Organisers' Silent Confirmation and Fan Reaction
Shortly after the singer's social media post, the festival's official Instagram page shared the flier for Day Two. Adekunle Gold's name and image were conspicuously absent from the lineup, silently confirming his exit.
Music Central Fest began on Friday, December 19, and featured other Nigerian artists like Fola, Made Kuti, Fave, and The Cavemen. Adekunle Gold was initially billed as a major headliner, and his sudden departure sparked significant discussion and disappointment among fans online.
As of the time of reporting, the organisers of Music Central Fest have not issued any public statement addressing the singer's specific claims or providing their side of the story.
Part of a Wider Trend in Nigeria's Live Event Scene
This incident is not isolated. It adds to a growing list of controversies plaguing Nigeria's live music and concert scene in recent weeks, highlighting systemic issues with event planning and execution.
Just last week, singer Fola apologised to attendees after safety concerns arose at his 'What a Feeling' concert, which was organised by Mainland Blockparty.
Earlier on the same day as Adekunle Gold's cancellation, fellow artist BNXN (formerly Buju) also issued an apology. This was after fans complained about being denied entry to his concert despite having valid tickets. BNXN blamed the event organisers for prioritising profit over safety and personally refunded ₦250,000 to one affected fan.
Adekunle Gold's decision to withdraw, rather than deliver a potentially substandard show, is being seen by many as a stand for greater professionalism and accountability within the country's entertainment industry. It underscores a rising demand from both artists and the public for better organised and safer live events.
