Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy and Colombian pop icon Shakira have officially collaborated on the anthem for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The track, titled 'Dai Dai', is scheduled for release on May 14 and is expected to build excitement for the tournament, which will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
Shakira Announces Collaboration
Grammy-winning artist Shakira took to social media to announce the single featuring Burna Boy. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this partnership, which will serve as the official anthem for the global football event. In her announcement, Shakira shared a preview with the caption: "From Maracaná Stadium, here is 'Dai Dai,' the @FIFAWorldCup Official Song 2026. Coming 5/14. We’re ready!"
Burna Boy Joins Elite List
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Burna Boy, making him the second Nigerian artist to feature on a FIFA World Cup anthem, following Davido. Davido appeared on the official 2022 World Cup anthem 'Hayya Hayya (Better Together)' alongside American singer Trinidad Cardona and Qatari star AISHA. He also performed at the closing ceremony in Qatar.
Shakira's World Cup Legacy
Shakira is no stranger to World Cup anthems. She previously recorded the iconic 'Waka Waka' for the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Her albums have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, and her songs have garnered billions of streams. 'Dai Dai' blends English and Spanish, continuing her tradition of creating global hits.
Historic 2026 Tournament
The 2026 World Cup will be historic for several reasons. It will be the first edition featuring 48 teams, up from 32, and the first to include a halftime show during the final. Nigerian artists have been making waves at major football events: Tems performed at the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, Davido at the 2022 World Cup final, and Burna Boy at the 2023 UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul.
Tournament Details
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled from June 19 to July 11. The opening match will see Mexico face South Africa, a replay of the 2010 World Cup opener. Although Nigeria's Super Eagles will not participate, Afrobeats music is set to make a strong impression on the global stage.
