In a significant spiritual event in Imo State, a renowned Nigerian gospel artist and philanthropist based in Canada has officially joined the priesthood of the Anglican Church. Rev'd Chinedu Nmezi was formally ordained during a special service in Nkwerre, marking a pivotal transition from music ministry to pastoral duties.
A Ceremony of Spiritual Commitment
The ordination took place on 26 December 2025 at the Cathedral Church of SS Peter and John the Divine in Nkwerre. The service was part of the diocese's Advent Ordination programme, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Orlu, Rt Rev'd Benjamin Okeke, JP. During the solemn ceremony, Rev. Nmezi took vows before the congregation, committing to perform his ministerial duties with diligence and in full alignment with Anglican doctrines and practices.
The atmosphere was charged with celebration and spiritual renewal. Hymns, prayers, and expressions of gratitude filled the cathedral. The event also saw other candidates ordained into various roles, including deacons, priests, canons, and archdeacons.
Bishop's Charge and Family's Joy
In his address, Bishop Benjamin Okeke highlighted the importance of the ordination for spreading the Gospel. He charged Rev. Nmezi and others to be true ambassadors of Jesus Christ, bearing lasting fruits. The Bishop emphasised virtues like faithfulness, holiness, obedience, humility, and diligence as essential for effective ministry and prepared them for potential challenges ahead.
Following his ordination, an elated Rev. Nmezi expressed profound gratitude to God, the Church, and the diocese for their support. He described his new role as a call to greater service and sacrifice. "I feel so excited today. It's the making of the Lord. I'm motivated to do the work of God as I'm called to do," he said, pledging to follow Christ's footsteps in serving humanity.
His wife, Mrs. Vivian Nmezi, shared her delight, thanking God for calling her husband into the priesthood. She promised to be a supportive partner, ensuring the success of his pastoral assignments. Family members, including his cousin Canon Ihejieto Ukachi from the Ikwuano Anglican Diocese in Abia State, praised Nmezi's dedication to spiritual and social causes.
A New Chapter for Diocese and Ministry
The ceremony concluded with prayers and celebrations, attended by a host of dignitaries, clergymen, parishioners, and well-wishers. Notable attendees included a former Minister of State for Education, Hon. Emeka Nwajuba, and a former state lawmaker, Hon. Obinna Okwara. The event marks the beginning of a new chapter for Rev. Nmezi, with collective hope that his priesthood will significantly strengthen the mission of the Anglican Diocese of Orlu and beyond.
