Nigerian filmmaker Biodun Stephen has publicly shared a deeply emotional and personal reaction after viewing Funke Akindele's latest cinematic release, Behind the Scenes. In a heartfelt video posted to her Instagram account, Stephen described the film's narrative as profoundly resonant with her own life experiences, particularly her ongoing struggles with trust, relationships, and the pain of betrayal.
A Personal Connection to the Storyline
"I just finished watching Funke Akindele's Behind the Scenes. So apt, so true, so relatable," Stephen expressed. She detailed how the film's lead character, Ronke, deeply affected her during the viewing. Stephen was troubled by Ronke's portrayal as a fundamentally kind individual who is consistently surrounded by people who cause her harm. "What kept bugging me as I was watching was how Ronke, such a good person, could be surrounded by so many bad people," she recounted.
A Mirror to Her Own Life
This observation led Stephen to a significant personal realization. "Then I realised that Ronke is me. I am a good person. If you know me, you know I believe in pouring into people," she stated. However, she candidly admitted a recurring personal flaw: despite her inherent kindness, she has historically struggled with selecting the right individuals to keep in her inner circle. This pattern, she revealed, has repeatedly resulted in feelings of betrayal and hurt. "But I have a bad taste in selecting those around me, and so repeatedly, they have hurt me," Stephen added.
Recounting a Recent Betrayal
The filmmaker went further to share a recent, painful personal incident. She revealed that just a few weeks prior, she had broken down in tears during a phone conversation with a close friend after being betrayed by someone she had trusted. "A few weeks ago, I was on the phone with my friend, and I was crying bitterly because somebody had just betrayed me," Stephen disclosed. This event prompted intense self-reflection, causing her to question her own character and judgment. "I kept asking myself, am I really a good person? Because how can a good person have so much bad taste in the people around her?" she pondered.
Finding Solace and Understanding in Film
According to Stephen, watching Behind the Scenes served as a therapeutic tool, helping her process these complex emotions and gain a better understanding of her personal situation. Reflecting on the film's core message, she highlighted an important lesson about the nature of kindness and the necessity of establishing personal boundaries. "When I was watching Behind the Scenes, I realised Ronke's love was kind. Love is kind, but it does not have to be nice because there are so many dragons out there," Stephen explained, emphasizing the distinction between being kind and being overly accommodating to one's own detriment.
The Cultural Impact of 'Behind the Scenes'
Behind the Scenes, produced by Funke Akindele, has not only achieved remarkable commercial success but has also ignited widespread conversation for its thematic depth. The film's plot centers on universal themes of relationships, loyalty, and personal growth. It recently made history by crossing the ₦2 billion mark at the box office, becoming the first Nollywood production to reach this financial milestone.
Beyond its impressive box office performance, the film has sparked significant discussions among viewers since its release on streaming platforms like Netflix and Kava TV. Many audience members report that the storyline powerfully mirrors everyday struggles, particularly the challenging balance between extending kindness to others and practicing necessary self-protection in a complex social world.
