Lere Paimo Alive, ANTP Debunks Death Report

The Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) has officially dismissed widespread online reports claiming the demise of veteran Yoruba actor, Chief Olalere Osunpaimo. The 86-year-old theatre icon, popularly known by his stage name Baba Eda Onile Ola, is alive and in good health.

Official Clarification from ANTP

The clarification was issued on Saturday, November 29, 2025, after several Facebook posts falsely announcing his death went viral, causing significant confusion and distress among theatre lovers and members of the Yoruba movie industry. In a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Adejonwo Oluwafemi, the association confirmed it had verified the actor's status directly with his family.

The statement read, "We would like to inform the public that reports circulating on Facebook about the passing of Chief Olalere OsunPaimo (MFR) are false. We have just spoken with Baba Eda Onile Ola and his wife. He is alive and in good health. Please disregard these false reports and be aware that they are being spread by unscrupulous individuals."

A Plea Against Misinformation

ANTP used the opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to practice due diligence before circulating information online. The association warned that false stories about prominent figures can cause unnecessary fear and emotional distress for their families, fans, and the wider community.

"We urge everyone to verify information before sharing to avoid spreading misinformation," the association advised, highlighting the potential harm of unverified reports.

Celebrating a Living Legend

Chief Lere Paimo is one of the oldest and most respected figures in Nollywood and Yoruba theatre, with a career that has spanned more than six decades. He holds a significant place in Nigeria's cultural history. Paimo rose to national fame through the classic epic "Ogbori Elemosho" and has since featured in countless stage plays, television dramas, and Yoruba films that have helped define traditional storytelling for younger generations.

Beyond his acting prowess, he is recognised as a cultural custodian, a mentor to young performers, and a respected voice in the preservation of Yoruba heritage. His immense contributions to the arts earned him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

The news of his well-being brought immense relief to his fans and colleagues, who took to various social media platforms to celebrate the fact that the cultural icon is alive. Many expressed their alarm at the initial rumour, citing his advanced age, and urged bloggers and social media users to stop spreading unverified stories about elderly entertainers.

Lere Paimo remains one of the oldest Nollywood actors still active, and his presence continues to be influential in the Yoruba film industry. Younger actors often describe him as a vital mentor and a bridge between the foundational era of indigenous cinema and the modern wave of Nollywood.
