Nollywood Actress Lilian Afegbai Issues Public Apology Over AMVCA Snub Reaction

Nollywood actress and producer, Lilian Afegbai, has issued a formal apology following her recent social media outburst directed at the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). The apology, shared via her social media handles on Saturday morning, follows a wave of controversy sparked by her omission from the 12th edition of the prestigious awards.

Initial Reaction and Criticism

Afegbai had previously expressed her displeasure and criticised the organisers after her name was missing from the Best Supporting Actress category, despite her amazing performance as ‘Idia’ in the Netflix crime series, “To Kill A Monkey.” The actress admitted that her initial reaction, which included a post telling the organisers they could “eat” their award, was rooted in a place of hurt.

The statement read, “This apology should have come earlier. That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my ‘To Kill A Monkey’ family, and all of you who have supported me.”

Emotional Response and Career Context

Afegbai explained that her emotional response came from the deep personal excellent delivery of her role in the Kemi Adetiba-directed series. She described the project as a “now they see me” moment in a career where she had long felt invisible. “When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt and entitlement, and it was out of character for me. I was wrong, and I am sorry.” She stated.

She concluded her apology with a plea for grace, promising her fans “I no go fall una hand again.”

Background of the Controversy

It all began on March 29, 2026, shortly after the AMVCA nomination list was unveiled. Afegbai took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her frustration, suggesting that her character was the most talked-about performance of the previous year. In her initial posts, she argued that she did not need a nomination for validation, asserting that nobody trended like IDIA from TKAM last year.

Her character, known for her sassy delivery and mastery of the Bini dialect and pidgin English, had indeed been a fan favourite, leading many to predict a certain nomination. When the list featured stars like Linda Ejiofor, Bisola Aiyeola, and Sola Sobowale instead, the actress’s blunt call-out post quickly went viral, which drew mixed reactions from the public and industry peers.

Career Achievements and Industry Impact

Despite the recent friction, Lilian Afegbai remains one of the industry’s most successful crossover stars. A former Big Brother Africa contestant, she successfully transitioned from reality television to serious acting and production. In 2018, she earned her own AMVCA trophy for Best Indigenous Movie (Igbo) for her production debut, Bound.

Her career has been marked by a steady rise, with notable appearances in films such as Road to Yesterday and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons.

Industry observers note that while her reaction was seen by some as unprofessional, it highlighted the intense pressure and emotional stakes African creatives place on the AMVCAs as the continent’s premier film honour. The organisers of the AMVCA have yet to issue a public response to the apology.
