Former Delta Chief Nursing Officer Dame Mabel Egede Laid to Rest Today
The family of the late Christopher Ikechukwu Egede from Boju Boju Owa in Delta State has announced the burial of their matriarch, Dame Mabel Bamidele Egede (nee Aleh), also known as Ezinne Ezioku or mother of truth. The funeral service is scheduled for today, April 10, 2026.
A Life of Service and Compassion
Dame Mabel Egede, born on July 5, 1943, in Osogbo, then part of Old Oyo State, to Pa Abel Mokwuye Aleh and Mama Grace Aleh (nee Ogboi), passed away on October 19, 2025. Her family described her as a devoted nurse, a woman of deep faith, and a compassionate individual whose influence extended far beyond her professional duties.
In a heartfelt statement, the family highlighted her remarkable career, noting that she held the prestigious position of Chief Nursing Officer of Delta State. She served in this role with honour, integrity, and excellence until her meritorious retirement. Widely respected for her contributions to nursing and her commitment to national development, she is remembered as a strong advocate for unity and progress in Nigeria, particularly in efforts to transform the health system.

The family shared touching anecdotes about her life, emphasizing her loving and dedicated nature. "She was a loving and dedicated woman of God whose kindness, strength, and warmth touched the lives of all who knew her," the statement read. "For her, nursing was not merely a profession; it was a calling rooted in compassion."
Her home was described as a sanctuary of warmth, where love flowed freely and kindness was abundant. During festive seasons, she would cook extensively and distribute food to in-laws, relatives, and community members, a tradition she joyfully upheld year after year. Known for her pure and simple heart, she was free of discrimination, quick to forgive, and deeply compassionate, loving genuinely and wholeheartedly without condition.
Faith and Recognition
At her local church, she was fondly called "Mama Environmental" or "Dame Environmental" due to her unwavering commitment to ensuring the House of God was clean and well-maintained. Even when travelling, she made arrangements for others to care for the church every weekend. Her generosity in supporting religious work was unmatched, as she dedicated virtually all her resources to advancing the kingdom.
In recognition of her integrity and steadfast stand for truth, she was conferred with the title Ezinne Ezioku, meaning mother of truth. The family noted that she stood boldly for what was right, without fear or favouritism.
