In a significant move to strengthen Nigeria's healthcare infrastructure, Shell Nigeria Gas Limited (SNG), Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) have jointly donated advanced medical equipment to the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital (LUTH). The donation includes an Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) system and a Body Plethysmograph, aimed at revolutionizing pulmonary or respiratory care diagnostics at the institution.
Enhancing Diagnostic Capabilities
The EBUS system is a cutting-edge tool that allows doctors to perform real-time guided biopsies and accurately stage lung cancer. This technology is crucial for determining appropriate treatment options and timelines, offering a more precise approach to managing one of Nigeria's leading health challenges. Meanwhile, the Body Plethysmograph facilitates improved diagnosis of conditions such as asthma and restrictive lung diseases, providing clinicians with detailed insights into patients' respiratory health.
A Strategic Shift in Healthcare
Ronald Adams, Managing Director of SNEPCo, emphasized that this initiative represents more than just a donation; it marks a strategic shift in healthcare delivery. In a speech delivered by Abubakar Ahmed, General Manager of Communications, Adams stated, "This is a shift from constrained diagnostics to evidence-based, technology-enabled respiratory care. It empowers clinicians to practice medicine at the full height of their training and builds institutional capacity that will shape Nigeria's healthcare landscape for generations."
Olanrewaju Igandan, Chief Upstream Investment Officer at NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), echoed this sentiment, highlighting the broader impact on national development. Professor WasiuLanre Adeyemo, Chief Medical Director of LUTH, represented by Prof Babawale, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, hailed the donation as a landmark event. "This donation not only makes advanced pulmonology care available but also makes it more affordable and convenient to access for Nigerians.
