New Bariatric Centre Opens in Onitsha, Ending SE Travel for Obesity Care
Specialist Obesity Treatment Centre Launches in Onitsha

Residents of Nigeria's Southeast region now have direct access to advanced specialist care for obesity and related conditions, following the launch of a new medical facility in Anambra State.

Partnership Brings Critical Care to Onitsha

On Tuesday, 13 January 2026, the Getslim Bariatric Center officially opened its new facility in Onitsha through a strategic collaboration with the established Rose Specialist Hospital. The private hospital, located on Njoku Crescent in the Oyolu Fighter area, is renowned for its multidisciplinary services and 24/7 patient care.

This partnership is a direct response to the increasing health burden posed by obesity and associated non-communicable diseases across the region. These include diabetes, various cardiovascular conditions, and complex metabolic disorders.

Ending the Journey for Treatment

Until now, patients in the Southeast requiring specialised bariatric and weight management interventions faced significant hurdles. Many were forced to undertake costly and stressful journeys to Lagos, Abuja, or even outside Nigeria to receive the necessary medical attention.

The new Onitsha centre is set to change this landscape entirely. It will offer a comprehensive suite of services locally, including:

  • Structured, medically supervised weight-loss programmes.
  • Thorough and comprehensive medical assessments.
  • Advanced bariatric surgical procedures.

Integrating Specialised Care into Trusted Community Health

The Managing Director of Getslim Bariatric Center explained the rationale behind the initiative. He stated that the goal was to integrate highly specialised obesity care into a healthcare facility that the local population already knows and trusts.

"Obesity is a significant public health challenge," he said. "By partnering with Rose Specialist Hospital, we are making specialist interventions accessible to residents in Onitsha and neighbouring areas. This move directly reduces barriers to care and will improve long-term health outcomes for our people."

The organisers emphasised that this initiative supports broader public health objectives and aligns with national efforts to improve the management of non-communicable diseases. A key benefit is the strengthening of specialised medical service availability within the Southeast region, promoting healthcare equity and accessibility.

With this launch, patients from Anambra and surrounding states can now seek life-changing treatment closer to home, marking a major step forward in Nigeria's healthcare infrastructure for chronic disease management.
