UNILAG Leaders Honor Pioneer Oncologist Prof. Kofi Duncan at Commendation Service
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) community gathered in solemn tribute to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Professor Kofi Duncan, West Africa's pioneering clinical and radiation oncologist. Distinguished personalities from the academic and medical fields converged at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) for a commendation service held in his honor, reflecting on his groundbreaking contributions to cancer care and his enduring impact on generations of professionals.

Among the notable figures who spoke at the event were UNILAG Vice Chancellor Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services) Prof. Afolabi Lesi; CMUL Provost Prof. Ademola Oremosu; and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Osato Giwa-Osagie. Prof. Ogunsola, through her representative, emphasized Duncan's pioneering spirit, noting, "He was a pioneer, a trailblazer and an icon. He was one of the pioneers of cancer treatment in Nigeria and West Africa. He was our teacher and a mentor to quite some people. He had a humble spirit and was very accommodating." This sentiment echoed throughout the service, underscoring his dual role as an innovator and a compassionate guide.

Prof. Oremosu provided historical context, detailing Duncan's early career and significant milestones. "Everything in life has a beginning and an end. Duncan trained at Ibadan and was one of the early members of staff at CMUL. He spent 10 years in the College and was among the first to tackle cancer using radiation therapy. He brought in state-of-the-art equipment at the time," Oremosu recounted. This highlighted Duncan's instrumental role in advancing medical technology and treatment methodologies in the region.
Prof. Giwa-Osagie added a personal touch, recalling Duncan's compassionate and lively nature. He noted their shared background, including attendance at King's College, Lagos, which fostered a bond beyond professional circles.
