Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared insights into how he has successfully managed diabetes for more than four decades. He spoke on Sunday, May 31, during the launch of a cancer awareness event.
Obasanjo's Health Journey
Obasanjo disclosed that he has been living with diabetes for over 40 years. He attributed his ability to manage the condition to an active lifestyle, a disciplined diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, routine medical check-ups, and strict adherence to prescribed medications.
Obasanjo stated: "I have a disease that is not curable yet and that's diabetes. I have been diagnosed diabetic more than 40 years ago. I still manage it."
Key Habits for Managing Diabetes
The former president explained that maintaining a strict lifestyle routine has enabled him to remain physically active despite his age. He said: "But what do I do? I play squash three times a week — Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, if I'm around. I watch what I eat."
He emphasized the importance of diet: "Diet can be exciting, can be pleasurable. But if you eat badly, then the consequence can also be bad on you. And then rest."
Obasanjo highlighted that adequate rest is just as crucial as proper nutrition and exercise. He shared: "You saw me early this morning. Then I went to church. Then I came back and I told my boy that the only time he can wake me up is when you come. And when I must rest, I will rest."
The DREMS Approach
Obasanjo summarized his healthy living approach with the acronym DREMS: D for Diet, R for Rest, E for Exercise, M for Medical, and S for Screening. He stressed the importance of regular medical screening and early diagnosis.
He urged older Nigerians to take routine health checks seriously. The event also featured a video of his speech, which was shared on social media.
