Feeling tired, bloated, or always sick? Nutritionists share fruits that may help. Fruits are easy to add to daily meals, yet many people still overlook the health benefits. Nutrition experts said some fruits may help with common health problems, but they should complement, not replace, proper medical care.
Common Health Issues and Fruit Solutions
Many people deal with fatigue, poor digestion and frequent illness without paying close attention to what they eat daily. In interviews with Guardian Life, clinical nutritionist and digital health creator Odukoya Fiyinfoluwa and nutrition and dietetics specialist Etim Anthony Goodness said simple fruit choices could support everyday health when eaten consistently, but warned that they should not replace proper medical care.
Guava for Immunity
“Eating guava regularly is a simple way to support your immune system, especially if you fall sick often,” Odukoya said. He explained that guava is rich in vitamin C, even more than oranges, and said the nutrient supports immune function and helps the body fight infections. He added that the fruit also contains antioxidants that protect the body’s cells from damage.
Banana for Low Energy
“If you often feel tired or low on energy, bananas are a good option,” Odukoya said. According to him, bananas provide natural sugars for quick energy and also contain potassium, which supports muscle function and helps reduce fatigue. He said they are also easy to digest, making them useful for children, busy adults and people recovering from illness.
Pawpaw for Digestion
“Pawpaw is very effective for improving digestion,” Odukoya said. He explained that the fruit contains papain, an enzyme that helps break down food and supports smoother digestion. He added that its fibre content may also help people dealing with constipation.
Orange for Hydration and Immunity
“Oranges are not just about vitamin C. They also have high water content, which helps with hydration,” Odukoya said. He noted that oranges may support skin health, wound healing and immune function, and said they are especially useful in hot climates where dehydration can happen easily.
Apple for Gut Health and Appetite Control
“Apples are rich in fibre, especially a type called pectin, which supports gut health,” Odukoya said. He added that apples may help regulate digestion and improve satiety, meaning they can help people feel full for longer and reduce frequent snacking.
Pineapple for Digestion and Recovery
“Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that supports digestion and may help reduce inflammation,” Odukoya said. He, however, advised that it should be eaten in moderation, especially by people with sensitive stomachs.
Watermelon for Hydration
“Watermelon is mostly water, so it’s excellent for hydration,” Odukoya said. He added that it also contains antioxidants like lycopene, which support heart health, and said it can be especially helpful in hot weather.
Avocado for Heart Health
“Although often grouped differently, avocado is a fruit and a very nutrient-dense one,” Odukoya said. He explained that it contains healthy fats that support heart health and help with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. He added that it is useful for both children and adults who need nourishing foods.
Expert Advice on Fruits as Supportive Tools
However, Etim said fruits should be seen as supportive tools, not cures. “Using fruits for common ailments can be helpful, but it shouldn’t replace proper medical care when needed. Think of fruits as supportive tools rather than cures,” she said.
Orange and Strawberry for Colds and Immunity
“Fruits rich in vitamin C can support your immune system, though they won’t instantly cure a cold,” Etim said. She listed orange and strawberry as examples, noting that they help the body fight infection and may slightly shorten the duration of symptoms.
Banana and Apple for Constipation
Speaking on digestive issues such as constipation, Etim said fibre remains key. She said ripe bananas and apples with the skin may support bowel movement and improve digestion.
Watermelon and Coconut Water for Dehydration and Fatigue
“Water-rich fruits can help rehydrate you, especially in mild cases,” Etim said. She listed watermelon and coconut water as useful examples, but warned that they are not a substitute for oral rehydration solutions in serious dehydration.
Apple and Avocado for Heart Health and Cholesterol
“Certain fruits can support cardiovascular health over time,” Etim said. She said apples and avocados contain fibre and healthy fats that may help manage cholesterol levels. “For anything persistent or serious, such as infections or chronic pain, medical treatment is essential,” she added.
