Family Defies Police Autopsy Order, Schedules Burial for Friday
The family of the deceased aide to Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has announced that the burial will take place on Friday, despite the police insistence on an autopsy. The aide, whose name has not been officially released, died under circumstances that have prompted a police investigation. However, the family, citing religious and cultural beliefs, has rejected the autopsy request and proceeded with burial arrangements.
Police Insist on Autopsy to Determine Cause of Death
The Nigeria Police Force had earlier demanded an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death, which they described as suspicious. According to police sources, the body was to be examined at a government hospital before any burial could take place. However, the family has refused, arguing that their faith prohibits such post-mortem procedures. A police spokesperson stated, “We have made our position clear; an autopsy is necessary to rule out foul play. We urge the family to cooperate with the investigation.”
Family Cites Religious Beliefs in Refusal
In a statement issued by the family spokesperson, they insisted that the deceased must be buried according to Islamic rites, which require burial as soon as possible after death. “Our religion does not permit delays for autopsies. We have already made preparations for the burial on Friday,” the statement read. The family also expressed confidence that the death was natural and called on the police to respect their beliefs.
Governor’s Office Reacts to the Development
The Ebonyi State Government, through the Governor’s spokesperson, has called for calm and urged both parties to find a middle ground. “Governor Umahi is deeply saddened by the loss of his aide and respects the family’s wishes. However, he also understands the need for a thorough investigation. We are working to resolve this amicably,” the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, security has been tightened around the family’s residence to prevent any breach of peace.
Community Leaders Mediate Between Family and Police
Community leaders in Ebonyi have stepped in to mediate the dispute, holding meetings with both the family and police representatives. They are proposing a compromise where a limited autopsy could be conducted without delaying the burial. One elder stated, “We are appealing to the police to consider the family’s religious sentiments while ensuring justice is served.” The outcome of these mediations remains uncertain as the burial date approaches.
