The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a final reminder to eligible Nigerians that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise closes today, Sunday, July 26, 2026. The commission urged those yet to register or update their voter details to do so before the deadline, emphasizing that registration is a prerequisite for participation in the 2027 general election.
CVR Deadline: Last Chance to Register
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, INEC stated, "Time is running out, but there's still an opportunity to make your voice count. Register to vote or update your voter information before the close of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) today, Sunday, 26 July 2026." The commission advised Nigerians who have not yet registered to complete the process through its online CVR portal or visit any INEC state or local government office before registration closes.
Services Offered During CVR
Beyond new registrations, the CVR exercise also allows already registered voters to apply for transfers, correct personal information, and replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The conclusion of the exercise marks the end of a nationwide voter registration programme that was carried out in three phases over the past year.
Three Phases of Registration
The first phase of the CVR began in August 2025 with online pre-registration, followed by physical registration on August 25, 2025. By the end of that phase in December 2025, INEC had recorded 2,572,054 completed registrations, comprising 1,503,832 online registrations and 1,068,222 completed through physical enrolment.
The second phase ran from January 5 to April 17, 2026, during which the commission recorded a further 3,748,704 completed registrations nationwide. Combined with the first phase, this brought the total to over 6.3 million new registrations before the third phase began.
Third Phase Extension
INEC launched the third phase of the exercise in May 2026 and later extended the registration period by an additional two weeks in July to enable more eligible citizens to participate. Despite the extension, the commission stressed that the deadline is now final. INEC urged prospective voters not to delay any further, reiterating that voter registration is essential for those intending to vote in the 2027 general election.
Impact on 2027 Elections
With the closure of the CVR, the electoral body will now shift focus to other preparatory activities for the 2027 general election, including the display of voter registers for claims and objections, and the production and distribution of PVCs. Eligible Nigerians who miss this deadline will not be able to vote in the 2027 elections, underscoring the urgency of the commission's final call.
