Kalu Hints at Abia Governorship Bid, Decision Soon

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Signals Potential 2027 Abia Governorship Campaign

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has strongly indicated that he will publicly reveal his decision regarding a potential bid for the Abia State governorship in the 2027 elections within the next few weeks. This announcement comes amid increasing pressure and vocal appeals from supporters, party stakeholders, and constituents across the state who are urging him to enter the political race.

Formal Endorsement and Statewide Support

Kalu made these remarks during a significant gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders and dedicated supporters in Umuahia, the capital city of Abia State. At this event, he received a formal and enthusiastic endorsement from party faithful representing all three senatorial districts of the state: Abia South, Abia Central, and Abia North.

The stakeholders expressed unwavering confidence in his leadership capabilities and political acumen, passionately urging him to contest the election. They emphasized their belief that Kalu possesses the vision and determination to "rescue" Abia State through a governance model focused on inclusivity and balanced development across all regions.

Acknowledging the Pressure and Promising a Timely Response

In his response, Kalu acknowledged the substantial and growing pressure he has faced to declare his candidacy. He revealed that similar appeals and requests for him to run have poured in from all 17 local government areas of Abia State, demonstrating widespread grassroots support.

However, the Deputy Speaker stopped short of making an immediate or outright declaration of his candidacy. Instead, he assured his supporters and party members that his definitive position on the matter would be clearly announced in the coming weeks, following careful consideration.

"On your request for me to contest for governor, I have received the same request from several local governments. My response will be made available in a few weeks’ time," Kalu stated. "I want to thank you for finding me worthy. I will respond in the open, where everyone will hear. When that response comes, you will be happy."

Call for Party Unity and Focus on Presidential Re-election

Kalu also took the opportunity to urge all APC members to remain united and to actively mobilize support at every level of the party structure. He noted that when he eventually makes his announcement regarding the governorship, it will involve a broader and more comprehensive political engagement strategy. This strategy will include coordinating with aspirants for various legislative positions to ensure a cohesive campaign effort.

Furthermore, Kalu stressed that the APC's immediate and paramount priority remains the successful re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. He called on all party supporters to fully align with the Renewed Hope Agenda and to work collectively and diligently to secure another mandate for the president.

"The number one agenda is to ensure that the mandate of the President is renewed in 2027," he emphatically added, reinforcing the party's national objectives alongside state-level ambitions.

Stakeholders Reaffirm Confidence in Kalu's Leadership

Several prominent stakeholders present at the meeting reiterated their strong support for Benjamin Kalu, describing him as a highly capable and visionary leader. They expressed confidence that if elected governor, Kalu has the potential to transform Abia State's economic fortunes and drive significant developmental progress, addressing long-standing challenges and unlocking new opportunities for the people.
