Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has categorically denied reports claiming he resigned from his position, warning that legal action will be taken against those spreading the false information. The retired general made this known on Tuesday after briefing President Bola Tinubu on the country's security situation at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Minister Denies Resignation Rumours
Speaking to State House correspondents, Mr Musa described the resignation report as baseless, insisting he had never discussed stepping down. “I’m not going anywhere. I have never discussed resignation. I don’t even know the person who brought that information,” he stated. He added that those behind the rumour would face legal consequences. “Whoever is behind it will face legal action and explain where such information came from,” he said.
Attribution to Malicious Actors
The minister expressed surprise at the report, attributing it to individuals uncomfortable with the progress recorded in the security sector. “I too was shocked when I saw it. I don’t know where it came from, but you should expect that some people will not be happy when things are going well. The security situation is improving,” he explained.
President Tinubu’s Satisfaction
Mr Musa noted that during the briefing, President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the nation's improving security. “I just came back from briefing Mr President on the current security situation, and he is very happy with us. We are going to continue doing well,” he said. The minister thanked Nigerians for their support of the armed forces, highlighting that growing public cooperation is contributing significantly to successes against terrorists and bandits. “The support has been massive, and you can see the changes. Defeating terrorists and bandits requires a whole-of-society approach, and Nigerians have embraced that. Things are getting better, and they will continue to improve,” he added.
Background on Appointment
Mr Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff, was appointed Defence Minister in December, replacing Mohammed Abubakar, who resigned days earlier. The minister's remarks come amid ongoing efforts to address security challenges across the country.
