A Life of Service: Diplomacy and Education

Born on June 11, 1930, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Christopher Mbanefo's career was marked by exceptional contributions to Nigeria's global standing and its educational sector.

In a pivotal appointment in 1999, former President Olusegun Obasanjo named Mbanefo as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He served in this crucial role during the country's return to democratic governance, representing Nigeria's interests on the world stage.

Beyond diplomacy, he left an indelible mark on higher education, serving as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for several premier universities:

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  • Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)

Legacy of Professionalism and Philanthropy

Mbanefo's foundational training was in accounting. After early education at Saint Patrick’s College in Calabar, he traveled to the United Kingdom for professional training in the mid-1950s.

He became a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), where he also served as President. He represented ICAN at the highest global levels, including on the boards of the International Federation of Accountants and the International Accounting Standards Committee.

A committed philanthropist, his passion for education was cemented through projects like the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre at the University of Lagos. He also held significant chieftaincy titles, including Odu III of Onitsha, reflecting his deep cultural roots and stature.

Tributes continue to pour in for a man widely celebrated as a symbol of integrity, whose life was dedicated to national development, diplomacy, and the advancement of education and professional standards in Nigeria.
