OAU Explains Why It Rejected Venue for Peter Obi's Lecture
OAU Rejects Venue for Peter Obi Lecture, Cites Short Notice

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has explained that the proposed venue for a lecture by Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, was declined due to insufficient notice from the organisers. Obi was scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the university on Saturday, April 25, 2026, before proceeding to Ibadan for an opposition parties' summit. However, he was later informed that the event had been called off.

Short Notice Cited as Reason

The university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, issued a statement on Sunday, April 26, 2026, clarifying the decision. He stated that the organisers failed to provide adequate details about the event and the guest until Friday, a day before the programme. This short notice made it impossible for the university to implement necessary security measures and logistical arrangements required for hosting a high-profile personality.

Olarewaju emphasised that the decision was made in the interest of safety and adherence to established protocols. He noted that events involving figures of such stature require prior notification to enable proper liaison with security agencies like the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Not a Reflection on Obi

The spokesperson clarified that the rejection was not a reflection of disregard for Obi's person or status. He stressed that the university values all guests but must prioritise safety and logistical readiness.

Obi's Reaction

Obi had earlier stated that the cancellation was not an isolated incident, noting that similar cancellations had occurred more than 10 times. He expressed concern over the pattern of event disruptions.

Broader Political Context

This development comes amid reports that Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may pursue a joint presidential ticket for the 2027 election, aiming to secure northern support through a power-sharing deal. A new group, the 'OK Movement', has been formed to galvanise support. Additionally, Obi recently met with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in a closed-door session, sparking speculation about political alignments.
