Significance of Workers' Day

Workers' Day is observed globally on May 1 each year to honor the contributions of workers and labor movements. It serves as a reminder of the historical and ongoing struggles for improved working conditions, fair wages, and workers' rights.

In Nigeria, key labor organizations such as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) typically organize nationwide rallies, marches, and symposia to advocate for workers' interests, demand better pay, protest economic challenges, and set annual themes that reflect current realities.

Additional Public Holiday Announcements

In related news, the Ogun State Government, under Governor Dapo Abiodun, also declared a public holiday to commemorate the state's 50th anniversary (Golden Jubilee). The Secretary to the State Government confirmed that the holiday would enable residents to participate in the anniversary programs.

Other recent public holiday declarations by the federal government include Eid-el-Maolud and Isese Day in certain states, as well as a holiday for all institutions in March 2026.
