Revival, as described in Joel 2:12–13 and Habakkuk 3:2, is the process of restoring spiritual life to those who have weakened or fallen away. It is a fresh spiritual awakening that renews passion for God and restores believers to a right relationship with Him. Personal revival begins with each individual and can spread to the church, community, and beyond.
The Four Requirements for Revival
According to 2 Chronicles 7:14, God calls His people to four specific actions: humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways. These steps are essential for experiencing God's forgiveness and healing.
Humbling Ourselves
Humility is the foundation of revival. Jesus taught that the poor in spirit are blessed, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:3). True humility involves evaluating ourselves in light of God's holiness and Word, rather than by our own feelings or the flattery of others. It means acknowledging God's ownership and rulership over our lives.
Prayer
Without humility, prayer is ineffective. God rejects proud prayers but delights in the humble cries of His people. Prayer must be coupled with a contrite heart to be acceptable to God.
Seeking God's Face
Seeking God's face implies an intimate relationship with Him. As we draw near, we are confronted with His holiness and love, which exposes our sin and selfishness. This encounter leads to repentance and a deeper appreciation of His mercy.
Repentance and Turning from Wicked Ways
Repentance is crucial for both salvation and sanctification. Confession of sins acknowledges that they are offenses against God, and turning from wicked ways means eliminating everything that displeases the Lord. This is a deliberate choice to walk in righteousness.
Revival is a spiritual awakening that begins with personal humility, prayer, seeking God, and repentance. As believers respond to God's call, they experience renewed passion and healing in their lives.
