2027 Election: PDP, 4 Opposition Parties May Endorse Tinubu
2027 Election: PDP, 4 Opposition Parties May Endorse Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu may have secured his second term in office even months ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. This is due to indications that about five opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), might end up endorsing him as their candidate in the next election cycle. Some opposition parties have already partially endorsed him, and others are expected to follow suit after resolving their internal crises.

Why PDP and Four Other Opposition Parties May Endorse Tinubu in 2027

The following is a list of opposition parties and the reasons they might endorse President Tinubu, despite his membership in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

The PDP, which lost the 2023 general elections to Tinubu, may endorse him in 2027. This is not because the party has lost almost all its governors, senators, and bigwigs, but because Nyesom Wike, a key influencer in the party, would want to retain his position as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to maintain his political relevance.

African Democratic Congress (ADC)

The ADC is facing a leadership crisis between coalition members and pre-existing members. If the faction led by Leke Abejide, a federal lawmaker, wins at the Supreme Court, the party may not field a presidential candidate. Abejide has publicly stated his close relationship with Tinubu and the APC, suggesting that his faction could adopt Tinubu as their candidate.

All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA)

APGA's sole governor, Charles Soludo, has indicated that the party will endorse Tinubu in 2027. This follows Tinubu's support for Soludo's second term and the appointment of Bianca Ojukwu, a party leader, to a federal position.

Labour Party

The Labour Party, which was a strong contender in 2023 with Peter Obi, may not repeat that performance. Obi has left the party, and its current governor, Alex Otti, has become a defender of Tinubu's government. The party has also lost many lawmakers to the APC, paving the way for a potential endorsement.

Accord Party

The Accord Party, strengthened by the defection of Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke, may adopt Tinubu. Adeleke has been campaigning with Tinubu's posters, indicating a possible endorsement in exchange for support for his second term.

These developments suggest that President Tinubu's path to re-election may be smoother than anticipated, as opposition parties align with him for political survival and strategic gains.
