ADC Criticizes FG's Silence in Wike-Navy Land Dispute Confrontation
ADC Faults FG Silence in Wike-Navy Land Saga

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized the federal government for maintaining silence regarding the recent confrontation between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and naval officers over a disputed land in Abuja.

Confrontation Over Illegal Land Ownership

The political tension escalated when Minister Wike engaged in a heated exchange with naval officer A.M Yarima and his team, who were allegedly acting on instructions from former Navy Chief Awwal Gambo. The dispute centers around land that Gambo reportedly claimed ownership of unlawfully.

During a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday, November 13, Wike explained his position, stating that many critics were overlooking the illegal deployment of military personnel in civil and private matters. The minister emphasized that he was representing President Bola Tinubu and deserved respect from the officers rather than confrontation.

ADC Condemns Federal Government's Inaction

In a statement released on Friday, November 14, through its spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC expressed deep concern over the federal government's failure to address the incident. The opposition party described Wike's actions as unacceptable and questioned why the minister needed to personally supervise the demolition operation.

The ADC's statement highlighted growing concerns about military involvement in civilian affairs and the apparent double standards in law enforcement when individuals have connections to powerful institutions.

Nigerians React to Political Fallout

The ADC's position has sparked diverse reactions across social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing polarized views on the matter.

Aminu Idah challenged the ADC's perspective, asking: "Did you not hear from Wike's press briefing on the whole issue? Why are educated people like this in this country?" He defended Wike's decision to visit the scene personally after reports of previous harassment by Yerima's men against ministry staff.

Another social media user, Kolawole Kehinde, criticized the ADC's focus, stating: "Oga, this is not how to do opposition. You guys are lazy and not dynamic. Can you speak about the rising cost of living? There are many issues that can sway public perception, but it's Wike that you are after."

Ubong Anang expressed disappointment with both parties, commenting: "In this modern world, we are celebrating lawlessness and impunity exhibited by both the Minister and the Naval officer."

The ongoing controversy highlights deeper issues concerning civil-military relations and the application of laws equally to all citizens, regardless of their institutional affiliations.
