The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted comments attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding the 2027 governorship succession. The party insists that the choice of a governor rests with the electorate, not with any individual.
ADC's Position on Leadership Emergence
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, the state chairman of the party, Chukwudi Dimkpa, emphasized that in a democracy, leadership emergence is determined by the people through the ballot, not by individual preferences. Dimkpa stated that the ADC is positioning itself as a credible platform anchored on transparency, internal democracy, and broad-based participation.
Commitment to Inclusive Politics
According to Dimkpa, the party is committed to building an inclusive political movement that reflects the aspirations of Rivers people. On the issue of zoning, the ADC chairman acknowledged its role in fostering balance and inclusion, particularly between riverine and upland communities. However, he stressed that equity must be complemented by competence.
Consultative Candidate Selection
Dimkpa added that the party would adopt a consultative approach in selecting its governorship candidate, with a view to presenting a credible aspirant capable of effective governance and acceptable across the state. He further said the party would, at the appropriate time, take decisions that would promote unity and strengthen democratic ideals.
Priorities for 2027 Elections
The ADC maintained that governance, security, and economic development remain top priorities for residents. The party noted that leadership choices ahead of the 2027 elections should reflect these critical concerns.
