Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has firmly denied claims that the church is affiliated with any political party, reiterating that it remains a place of worship for all Nigerians.
Speaking during the May edition of the church's Holy Ghost Service, themed "Excellent Counsel," Adeboye addressed public perceptions linking RCCG with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The event was reported by Vanguard on Saturday, April 2, and also covered by PM News.
Adeboye on Political Diversity in RCCG
Adeboye dismissed the notion that RCCG is an APC church, stating that such assumptions overlook the diverse political representation within the congregation. He said: "Some people are saying RCCG is an APC church. I just smile. In RCCG, you will find a governor from the Peoples Democratic Party sitting down with a governor from the Labour Party, APC, and APGA. By the special help of God, we are representative of the whole nation, and that is what we will continue to be."
Pulpit Remains Apolitical
The cleric emphasized that the pulpit is not used for political expression, regardless of the status of worshippers present. He explained that church activities focus on prayer and worship rather than political engagement or announcements. Adeboye added: "If you saw one governor among us today dancing and you were expecting he would be called forward to say something, we don’t do that. But if you come to worship with us, you are welcome. Our duty is to pray for everybody."
Adeboye's Political Influence
Despite his denial of political affiliation, Adeboye remains a powerful figure in Nigeria's political landscape. Presidential aspirants often seek his blessings, visiting his prayer sessions to be seen praying and shaking hands with him. His website features photos of him greeting world leaders. The RCCG, one of Africa's largest Christian movements, boasts over eight million followers worldwide, primarily in Nigeria.
Previous Clarification on First Lady's Role
In a related development, Adeboye previously clarified that Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, would not be removed from her position as a pastor in RCCG. He explained that she was ordained as an Assistant Pastor over a decade ago, before her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, indicated interest in the presidency. Adeboye stressed that the ordination followed due process and adhered to church guidelines, and that external pressure would not influence the church's decisions.
