The All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet to announce the winners of its governorship primary elections in at least four states, with party officials citing logistical challenges and the need for broader stakeholder consultations as reasons for the delay.
The ruling party conducted primaries in 28 of Nigeria's 36 states on Thursday, May 21, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections. The remaining eight states—Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo, and Osun—were excluded because they hold off-cycle governorship elections.
Bauchi State
The APC announced that its governorship primary in Bauchi would continue on Friday, May 22, after being postponed on Thursday. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar is a leading aspirant, but he faces strong contenders. Party leaders are reportedly engaging with stakeholders to reach a consensus.
Kwara State
In Kwara, the APC officially postponed its primary to Friday. Reports indicate that tensions escalated at the party secretariat in Ilorin, with suspected political thugs disrupting accreditation and coordination processes before the postponement.
Nasarawa State
Like Bauchi and Kwara, Nasarawa's primary was rescheduled for Friday due to the late arrival of electoral materials in most wards. By 6 pm on Thursday, materials had not reached many locations. Former Governor Tanko Al-Makura and other stakeholders have rejected the candidate favored by Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Yobe State
The APC has not officially declared a winner in Yobe, though reports indicate that Baba Malam Wali is leading and is expected to be announced as the candidate on Friday.
Kebbi Governor Secures Second Term Ticket
Meanwhile, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris secured the APC ticket for a second term through unanimous affirmation as the sole candidate. The affirmation took place during the party's governorship primary at the Haliru Abdul Stadium in Birnin Kebbi, with delegates from all 225 wards showing massive support.
