Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni has announced his withdrawal from the Accord Party governorship primary in Oyo State. The decision was made public on Tuesday via his X handle @OwoseniFatai and Facebook page, citing alleged manipulation of the party structure and escalating violence within the party.
Owoseni, who previously served as Security Adviser to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, expressed frustration over orchestrated plans aimed at undermining his candidacy. He stated that recent developments made it impossible for his gubernatorial ambition to thrive on the Accord platform.
Reasons for Withdrawal
In his statement, Owoseni highlighted two primary factors that compelled him to step back: the orchestrated moves within the party to frustrate his aspiration and the rising violence associated with the primary process. He noted that he initially ignored warning signs but could no longer overlook the situation.
“Within the past twelve hours, ongoing developments in the party point to orchestrated plans to ensure that our gubernatorial aspiration via the platform of the Accord Party is not achieved,” Owoseni said. “Even though I chose to ignore the initial signs, two things have now compelled us to pause and take decisive action.”
Impact on Supporters
The former police commissioner acknowledged the responsibility he owes to his supporters and announced his decision to rethink his political association with the Accord Party. He emphasized the need to re-evaluate his political company and future direction.
Owoseni’s withdrawal comes amid heightened political activity in Oyo State as parties prepare for the 2027 governorship election. The Accord Party has yet to officially respond to his announcement.
