Kwankwaso Denies VP Role Under Obi, ADC Talks Ongoing

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, has responded to reports that he plans to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that he is still engaging with relevant stakeholders and partners to determine his next political move.

Kwankwaso Addresses Defection Rumors

Kwankwaso, who previously ran for president under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), explained that he left the NNPP for the ADC due to legal issues. He noted that the ADC is now facing similar challenges. The former governor disclosed that he is in discussions with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) regarding a possible coalition.

Ongoing Talks with Peter Obi and Supporters

The comments come amid speculation that Kwankwaso has finalized plans to join the NDC alongside Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and their supporters. However, Kwankwaso clarified in a tweet on Saturday, May 2, that discussions are still ongoing regarding the planned defection from the ADC.

Regarding the possibility of dropping his presidential ambition to become Peter Obi's running mate in the 2027 elections, the former Kano governor stated that he has not endorsed any presidential candidate. He emphasized that he will prioritize Nigeria's interests, as he has always done.

ADC Membership and Presidential Ticket Zoning

Kwankwaso reiterated that he remains a member of the ADC. He noted that the coalition-adopted party has not yet zoned its presidential ticket to any specific region. He dismissed claims that he has accepted the role of vice presidential candidate for 2027.

Public Reactions

Kwankwaso's statement has sparked reactions from Nigerians. Here are some comments:

  • Obidient Premier urged Kwankwaso and Obi to act quickly: "Atiku and his crew will mess up ADC. Their precedents speak volumes. Both you and Obi should make haste now, or else their plan is to keep you stranded. Listen to Wike and understand who they are."
  • Tai advised Kwankwaso to leave the ADC promptly: "Staying in ADC, as you rightly said, comes with risks. For ADC to be on the ballot in 2027 would require a miracle. It may be wiser to move now while there is still time."
  • Omo Ologo urged the former presidential candidate to exit the ADC: "You just confirmed my earlier position that the Supreme Court judgment was a trouble in disguise for your coalition. It is better you look for another party or wait until 2031."
  • Uzoh questioned reports that Kwankwaso agreed to be Obi's VP: "I also asked when Kwankwaso agreed to be VP for Obi? Obidients sometimes like delusion. They have been shouting OK, but now Kwankwaso is denying any vice role. Eyes will peel."
