Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has rejected allegations that he is indirectly working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections. The former Kano State governor and opposition leader described the claims as false and driven by political desperation.
Kwankwaso Reacts to Allegations
Speaking in a video interview with Global TV Nigeria on Wednesday, May 20, Kwankwaso stated that only “foolish people” would believe such assertions. He emphasized his commitment to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and its blueprint for addressing insecurity, education, infrastructure, and corruption.
Sunusi Tofa's Claims
The allegations were first made by Sunusi Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House. During an appearance on Arise Television, Tofa claimed that recent political activities and strategic engagements suggest Kwankwaso is indirectly working towards President Tinubu’s re-election. He argued that certain political calculations by the former governor would ultimately favor the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Kwankwaso's Firm Denial
Kwankwaso dismissed Tofa’s remarks, insisting that he is a serious opposition figure. “I think only foolish people would believe that. They have been saying it, especially when we are in the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP). Now, they will realize we are very serious people. I don’t think common sense will tell you we are working for anybody,” he said.
He reiterated the NDC’s commitment to tackling Nigeria’s challenges, including insecurity, education, infrastructure, and corruption. “Our blueprint is there for everybody to see. What we intend to do, ranging from tackling insecurity, to the issue of education, the infrastructure for all the countries, including water supply, electricity, roads, and so on and so forth. And of course, tackling the issue of corruption, which has been our problem right from Independence to date. And somebody has to come and address that,” Kwankwaso added.
Political Realignments Ahead of 2027
The exchange comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections. Kwankwaso, a key opposition figure, has been involved in strategic meetings with other opposition leaders, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi. Obi recently visited Kwankwaso in Abuja after the NDC screening committee cleared him for the party’s presidential primary.
Observers note that the allegations against Kwankwaso may be part of efforts to undermine opposition unity. However, Kwankwaso remains steadfast in his opposition to the current administration, signaling a tough political battle in the lead-up to the next election cycle.
