Five men lost their lives early Saturday, August 22, 2026, when a Toyota Camry veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an Iveco truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the crash occurred at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop, after the Camry driver lost control at speed and crossed into the opposite lane.

Details of the Fatal Crash

The accident happened in the early hours of the morning. The Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, struck an Iveco truck bearing registration number T28081 LA. LASEMA received a distress call at 5:16am and dispatched its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to the scene.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement that preliminary investigations pointed to over-speeding and reckless driving by the Camry driver as the cause. "Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by over-speeding and reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Camry driver. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and had a head-on collision with the oncoming Iveco truck," the statement read.

Victims and Recovery Operations

All five occupants of the Camry, described as adult males, died from the impact of the collision. Their remains were recovered, bagged with dignity, and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps for further action.

Multiple emergency and security agencies worked jointly at the crash site, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and police officers from the Morogbo Division. Two tow trucks were used to remove the wreckage from the expressway. Both vehicles were taken to the Morogbo Police Division, and the road was subsequently reopened to traffic.

Official Response and Call for Caution

Oke-Osanyintolu extended condolences to the families of the five victims. He also urged motorists to abandon dangerous habits such as over-speeding and wrongful overtaking, especially during early morning hours when road conditions can be unpredictable.

He added that LASEMA remained committed to prompt emergency response and inter-agency coordination in line with the Lagos State Government's T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, which focuses on protecting the lives and property of residents across the state.

In Gombe state, nine people died following a collision involving a trailer and a Sharon bus on the Kaltungo Cham road. According to Daily Trust, the crash occurred in Kaluwa community within Kaltungo Local Government Area and was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps on Monday.
