Afrobeats superstar Davido has described Nigerian politics as "evil" and declared he wants no part in it, despite playing an active role in his uncle's re-election campaign. In a social media exchange with the All Progressives Congress (APC) youth leader, Davido said he supported his family on his own and accused the opposition of being "ruthless and disgusting."
Davido's Role in Osun Election
Davido's name featured prominently in Nigeria's political circles during the hotly contested Osun State gubernatorial election, where he actively campaigned for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke. The election, held on August 15, 2026, saw Adeleke of the Accord Party defeat the APC's Bola Oyebamiji with 511,067 votes to 411,815.
In a lengthy post on X, APC's national youth leader, Dayo Israel, attributed part of his party's loss to the youthfulness and energy Davido brought to Adeleke's campaign. According to Israel, Davido led youth mobilisation by using his influence, digital reach, and credibility to connect the campaign to a young generation. The APC youth leader also claimed that Davido brought artists, influencers, and young voices into the process.
Davido's Response
Davido, however, disagreed with Israel's submission. The musician stated that he supported his family on his own with no backing or protection. During the election, the multi-award-winning star used his social media pages to draw attention to the electoral process and scrutinise the activities of INEC and security forces.
Replying to Israel, Davido accused the APC of being ruthless and said it reflects the evil nature of Nigerian politics, which he doesn't want to be a part of. He wrote: "I brought no one! No one defended me! I backed my family on my own!! You guys are ruthless and disgusting! Eeewwww! I have done my job! Nigerian politics is evil AND I DON'T WANT TO BE A PART OF IT TILL GOD HELPS US!"
Insider Perspective and Future Elections
Davido's assessment of the Nigerian political scene can be considered an insider's perspective, given his family's rich political history, especially in Osun State, where they are among the most popular and powerful. With the 2027 general elections approaching, the Osun State election is considered a training exercise for both political parties, INEC, and voters hoping their ballots count.
