Kwankwaso Vows Constructive Engagement Amid Defection Rumours

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has reiterated his commitment to constructive political engagement as the 2027 general elections approach. In a statement issued on Saturday, April 2, 2026, Kwankwaso urged the public to disregard rumours circulating through unofficial channels regarding his political future.

Kwankwaso Dismisses Speculation

The former New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) leader stressed that no final decision has been made about his next move or that of his associates. He emphasised that any definitive position will be communicated through official channels at the appropriate time.

Kwankwaso said: “We shall continue to engage constructively at all levels. Any definitive position on our political direction will be communicated formally through official channels at the appropriate time.”

Consultations with NDC and PRP

Kwankwaso confirmed that he has begun wide-ranging consultations on his next political move following the recent Supreme Court judgment on the leadership tussle within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The Supreme Court, on Thursday, April 30, ordered that the dispute be returned to the Federal High Court for determination on its merits.

Since the opposition summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in March, speculation has linked Kwankwaso to a possible joint presidential ticket with former Anambra State governor Peter Obi. The rumours have intensified, with supporters circulating campaign posters on social media.

Defection Reports Denied

On Saturday, April 2, reports emerged suggesting that both Kwankwaso and Obi were finalising plans to exit the ADC due to uncertainty over the party's ticket. Their next destination was reportedly the Seriake Dickson-led National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In his statement, Kwankwaso acknowledged ongoing consultations with leaders of the NDC, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and other stakeholders. He described reports of a definitive realignment as premature, stressing that discussions are still ongoing.

Kwankwaso’s full statement was shared via his verified X and Facebook accounts.

Background

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. He previously ran for president under the NNPP in the 2023 elections. The political landscape ahead of 2027 remains fluid, with various opposition figures exploring alliances.

Earlier, Primate Elijah Ayodele advised Kwankwaso against re-contesting future elections, urging him not to waste resources on another political bid.
