Obi Pursues Easy Road, Couldn't Fight Atiku, Amaechi – Onanuga

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has stated that former presidential candidate Peter Obi consistently chooses the path of least resistance, a strategy that he claims will ultimately lead to his downfall. This comment came after Obi announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party he had joined just a few months earlier after leaving the Labour Party, which had fielded him as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Obi's Reasons for Leaving ADC

In a statement explaining his exit, Obi clarified that his decision was not driven by any mistreatment from the ADC’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, nor by the presence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He also emphasized that no other respected leaders within the party had personally wronged him, and he would continue to hold them in high regard. However, Obi pointed out that the same Nigerian state apparatus and its agents, which he accused of creating unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party and forcing him to leave, now appeared to be infiltrating the ADC. He cited endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division as evidence, arguing that these distractions prevented the party from focusing on deeper national problems and fostering a politics of service and nation-building.

Onanuga's Response

Reacting to Obi's announcement, Onanuga took to social media to express his views. He asserted that Obi's real reason for leaving the ADC was his inability to confront other presidential hopefuls vying for the party's ticket. Onanuga wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “We told you so. The political nomad is on the move again. Ignore all those puerile reasons he gave in these illogical musings, a self-serving letter to his mob. Peter Obi is a politician made of jelly, an opportunistic fellow. He can’t fight Atiku or Amaechi for the ticket of ADC. He pursues the easy road, that will only lead him to doom, like in 2023. He always blames the government without doing a soul-searching of himself. Welcome, Peter to the 2027 race.”

Onanuga further criticized Obi's pattern of shifting political allegiances, describing him as a political nomad who avoids challenging situations. He reiterated that Obi's tendency to blame external factors rather than engage in self-reflection would continue to hinder his political ambitions.
