Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has confirmed his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing deepening internal crises and a hostile political environment. Obi made the announcement in a personal statement released on Sunday via his official X handle, where he reflected on the increasingly toxic nature of Nigeria's political space and the pressures faced by public figures.
The former governor of Anambra State clarified that his decision was not driven by personal grievances against party leadership. He specifically mentioned the party's National Chairman, David Mark, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stating that he continues to hold both in high regard. Instead, Obi attributed his exit to recurring internal conflicts and external pressures within the ADC, which he said mirrored the challenges that led to his earlier exit from the Labour Party.
Reasons for Leaving
According to Obi, the same Nigerian state actors and agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party, forcing him to leave, now appear to be infiltrating the ADC. He pointed to ongoing court cases, internal divisions, and a growing atmosphere of suspicion within the party, arguing that these issues divert attention from addressing pressing national concerns.
Obi also criticized a political culture where integrity, humility, and commitment to service are often misinterpreted as weakness. He noted that individuals acting in good faith are frequently subjected to criticism and misrepresentation. “Even within spaces where one labours sincerely, one is sometimes treated like an outsider,” he said, adding that he and his team had often become targets of blame despite their contributions.
Commitment to a Better Nigeria
The former presidential candidate reiterated that his political ambition is not driven by a pursuit of power, but by a desire to see a more equitable and functional society. “I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society that works for all,” he stated.
Despite his departure from the ADC, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria's development and expressed optimism about the country's future. He emphasized the need for leadership anchored on justice, compassion, and equal opportunity, concluding that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
