Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has asserted that President Bola Tinubu is deeply intimidated by his strong connection with everyday Nigerians at the community level. Sowore made this claim on Thursday, July 16, during a media chat outside the courtroom, following a warning from the Federal High Court that it would close his defense if he did not proceed with presenting his case.
Background of the Case
Sowore is currently facing allegations of circulating false information regarding the President. He is accused of labeling the nation's leader as a 'criminal' in publications shared across his personal X and Facebook pages. The charges stem from posts that Sowore allegedly made, which the government claims are defamatory and intended to incite public discontent.
Sowore's Statement to the Press
While addressing the press, the rights campaigner explained that his primary goal is to offer a brand of leadership capable of fixing all sectors of the nation, including the justice system. 'But we know the big deal. The big deal is that there is an election that is coming. Tinubu is mortally, mortally afraid of my popularity with the grassroots,' Sowore remarked. He emphasized that his campaign is not based on material inducements, stating, 'But we are not paying a dime. We are not distributing bread. No soap, no rice, not even bitter cola, no tom-tom, no kuli-kulli or akara.'
Political Implications
Sowore's comments highlight the ongoing political tensions ahead of the next general election. He positions himself as a grassroots candidate who relies on genuine support rather than vote-buying. 'People are saying Sowore has come again. That's what it's all about. We are here to provide the leadership for this country that can make Nigeria work, including the judiciary,' he stated. The court case adds a layer of legal scrutiny to his political ambitions, as he continues to rally support despite the charges.
