Sowore's AAC Begins Presidential Primary in Abuja as He Hands Over Party Leadership
Sowore's AAC Starts Presidential Primary in Abuja, Hands Over Leadership

The African Action Congress (AAC) has kicked off its presidential primary in Abuja, with party members and supporters gathering in large numbers at the National Centre for Women Development in the Central Business District on Tuesday, May 26.

Supporters Gather for Primary

Videos shared on social media showed a hall filled with young people ahead of the exercise. A voice in one of the videos indicated that the primary would begin in a few hours and that members were awaiting the arrival of the party's National Working Committee. The speaker hailed the AAC as a party for the oppressed.

The development comes days after the party's founder, Omoyele Sowore, announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the AAC platform. The human rights activist made the declaration on Friday, May 22, joining a growing list of aspirants seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

Leadership Handover

It was also reported that Sowore officially handed over the leadership of the AAC to Pastor Samuel Ajeyigbe, who previously served as the Deputy National Chairman (Admin) of the party. This move is seen as a strategic decision ahead of the internal political process.

If Sowore emerges as the AAC presidential candidate, it will be his third attempt at the presidency, having been the party's flagbearer in the 2019 and 2023 elections.

Reactions from Nigerians

Reactions have followed the footage of the primary preparations. Some social media users expressed mixed feelings. @nekekings1 wrote: It looks like they went to secondary school to gather children, and why are some hiding their faces? @vin_chimaobi042 said: I like Sowore, but he would do better as a lawmaker or minister of youth and sports. These youths are Peter Obi's potential voters. @Dprince_O commented: Sowore packed a hall full of students. Maybe they told them it was their SUG election. @Foreignmann7b7 opined: Sowore should start from somewhere. He knows why Nigeria is not working, but he cannot work alone. A coalition could have been a starting point. @Abiona_mayor wrote: Nigerian youth need to move with Sowore. I love what I am seeing. See Nigeria's future sitting to vote in a primary. APC and other parties would not allow these youths to do pre-election, let alone a primary. God bless Sowore. Sowore 2027.
