Tuchel Opens Up on Controversial Squad Selection

Thomas Tuchel has explained his decision to omit several high-profile players from England's 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. The German coach announced his final 26-man list on Friday, sparking widespread debate across English media and social media platforms.

Among the notable absentees are Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Manchester City's Phil Foden, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Manchester United's Harry Maguire. The exclusion of these stars has drawn sharp criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Difficult Phone Calls

Speaking during a live broadcast to unveil the squad, Tuchel admitted that informing the omitted players was emotionally challenging. He revealed that he personally called each player to break the news out of respect for their contributions.

“Oh, difficult, difficult phone calls because I respect all of them, I respect them as players, as personalities… It was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult, and even in the phone calls, I felt the emotions,” Tuchel stated.

Reasoning Behind the Decisions

Tuchel emphasized that his choices were based on recent performances and the need for a balanced squad. He highlighted the strong displays of the current group during the September, October, and November international breaks, which featured a mix of experienced and younger players.

“In the end, we went back to the evidence that we had, and the evidence we had was in September, October and November, where the leadership group and the team itself made some bigger calls in September and repeated the camp with the same group and then had only very few changes in November,” he explained.

He added: “It felt that we had a bit of fresh air, we had a bit of younger players who played with hunger and excitement, and that was a good mix between young and old, usefulness and senior partnership, and it brought the best out of the players.”

Avoiding Past Mistakes

The former Chelsea boss also noted that he wanted to avoid the error of previous managers by not selecting too many players in similar positions. He argued that bringing multiple number 10s and forcing them to play out of position would not benefit the players or the team.

“Does it mean that the other guys did anything wrong? No, for some of them it was a positional thing that we also tried to have a balanced squad and not to bring five number 10s and make them play out of position, because whom would we do a favour with that? The players? Ourselves? I don't think so,” Tuchel concluded.

England's World Cup Campaign

England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. The Three Lions aim to surpass their quarter-final finish in 2022 and semi-final appearance in 2018.

Harry Maguire, one of the omitted players, expressed shock at his exclusion, having been confident of making the squad. The Manchester United defender's reaction adds to the ongoing debate surrounding Tuchel's selections.
