In a significant move to honor a distinguished figure, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has officially announced the establishment of a committee tasked with organizing a befitting state burial for the late former First Lady of the state, Chief Mrs Lucia Onabanjo. This announcement was made during a condolence visit to the Onabanjo family in Ijebu-Ode on Thursday, following the passing of the esteemed matriarch.
Committee Leadership and Membership
The committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, ensuring high-level coordination and oversight. Other key members include the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Mr Dare Alebiosu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Dapo Okubadejo, reflecting a cross-sectional representation from state governance structures.
Tributes to a Life of Service and Legacy
Governor Abiodun described the late Mrs Onabanjo as an exemplary First Lady who utilized her position to render selfless service to both God and humanity. He emphasized that the state government would be fully involved in providing a dignified and well-deserved burial for the wife of former Governor Chief Bisi Onabanjo, highlighting her impactful contributions.
"Mama lived for 100 years and would have turned 101 this year," the governor noted. "She led a ripe and fulfilled life, leaving behind legacies that call for the celebration of a purposeful and meaningful existence."
He further recounted her marriage to a renowned journalist and outstanding governor, who established landmark institutions such as Ogun State Television and Olabisi Onabanjo University. Mrs Onabanjo herself was a trained teacher, a supportive wife who traveled extensively with her husband, a devoted homemaker, a loving mother, and an exemplary First Lady.
Reflections on Mortality and Impact
While acknowledging the mourning of her departure, Governor Abiodun stressed that there is much to be thankful for, given the impactful life she lived. "Though we mourn a great woman, a titan, and an industrious daughter of Ijebu land and Ogun State, we should be grateful that she lived a life worthy of emulation," he stated.
He also urged people to lead lives of positive impact, noting the inevitability of death regardless of age. "No matter how long one lives, death is certain. It is only a question of when God will call us home," the governor added, framing her passing as a profound loss to her family, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large.
Family Appreciation and Final Moments
Speaking on behalf of the family, Barrister Bukola Onabanjo expressed gratitude for the godly upbringing provided by her mother and recounted the events leading to her final moments. She also thanked Governor Abiodun, the Ogun State Government, and the people of the state for their unwavering support and solidarity during this difficult time.
