Former Kaduna Governor Raises Alarm Over Alleged Coordinated Campaign
Former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly raised an alarm over what he describes as a coordinated effort to damage his reputation and ensure his prolonged detention. The chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) specifically pointed to recent developments that he claims indicate a troubling pattern against him, warning of malicious orchestrations designed to undermine his legal standing and character.
Media Report Sparks Controversy and Legal Response
According to a statement issued by El-Rufai's Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the former governor cited a report published by The Nation newspaper on April 18. The report, titled El-Rufai's trial: Gunmen invade principal witness home, detailed allegations from witness Mohammed Umar Karage that armed men had invaded his residence, potentially in connection with his role in an ongoing trial at the Kaduna State High Court.
El-Rufai's camp argued that this publication was deliberately crafted to smear his image and implicate him in serious offenses. They emphasized that any objective reader would recognize the clear intent behind these statements: to tarnish his reputation and justify his continued detention. The former governor described himself as a law-abiding citizen with no connection to the alleged incident and warned that the rule of law must not be turned into a tool of oppression.
Legal Action Planned and Ongoing Proceedings
In response to these allegations, El-Rufai disclosed that his legal team has been instructed to initiate defamation proceedings against the newspaper. He stressed that he should be accorded the full due process guaranteed by law to every citizen, and that the persistent disregard for his rights must cease immediately.
This development comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings against El-Rufai. Recall that he faces multiple charges of alleged fraud and abuse of office brought forward by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). While the Federal High Court has granted him bail, the Kaduna State High Court has reserved ruling on his bail application until April 21, 2026.
Background and Recent Developments
El-Rufai was recently released by the ICPC shortly after the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt. During his time in custody, he reportedly focused on personal activities. The situation has drawn significant attention, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu extending condolences to El-Rufai, sparking mixed reactions across social media platforms.
The former governor's allegations highlight the intense political and legal battles surrounding his case, with implications for due process and media responsibility in Nigeria's evolving political landscape.
