The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced the public holidays for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, granting workers across the nation days off to mark the festivities.

Official Declaration and Dates

In an official statement released on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the government declared Thursday, December 25, 2025, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays. These will mark the Christmas and Boxing Day celebrations respectively. Furthermore, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has also been declared a public holiday to usher in the New Year.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, acting on behalf of the Federal Government. The formal press release was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Minister's Message of Unity and Peace

Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm Christmas and New Year felicitations to Christians in Nigeria and globally, as well as to all Nigerians celebrating the transition into a new year. He emphasized the core values of the season, urging Christians to reflect on the virtues demonstrated by the birth of Jesus Christ.

"The virtues of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice are critical to promoting unity, tolerance, and harmony in our nation," the Minister stated. He called on every Nigerian, regardless of religious belief or ethnic background, to use the period to pray for the country's continued peace, security, and progress.

The Minister highlighted the festive season as a unique opportunity for national bonding. "The Christmas season and the New Year present an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and renew our collective commitment to nation-building," he affirmed.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also enjoined citizens to celebrate responsibly. He urged the public to remain law-abiding, be security-conscious, and moderate in their celebrations. Cooperation with security agencies was emphasized as vital to ensuring a peaceful and safe holiday period for all.
