The Federal Government has declared Friday, 12 June 2026, a public holiday across the federation to commemorate this year's Democracy Day. Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Significance of June 12
Dr Tunji-Ojo noted that June 12 remains a monumental milestone in Nigeria's political history, standing as a testament to the collective courage, resilience and supreme sacrifices of patriots whose struggles anchored democratic governance in the nation.
Government's Commitment to Democracy
The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to preserving fundamental democratic ideals, pledging that the government would continue to uphold the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance without compromise.
Security Measures
He disclosed that the interior ministry is working in close coordination with various state security agencies to reinforce internal security protocols and safeguard lives and property nationwide to ensure a peaceful celebration. He said a secure and stable environment remains a crucial prerequisite for sustainable national development and democratic stability.
Call to Citizens
Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to utilize the national holiday for sober civic reflection, encouraging Nigerians to recommit themselves to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and lawful conduct. "As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens," the minister stated.
