Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has declared his willingness to lead advocacy efforts for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), but only under one crucial condition.
The Conditional Offer for Pardon
In an exclusive interview with Channels Television, Sheikh Gumi stated that he would be at the forefront of pushing for Kanu's pardon and amnesty if the separatist leader demonstrates genuine remorse for his actions and public pronouncements. Last Thursday, the Federal High Court in Abuja found Kanu guilty on seven counts of terrorism and sentenced him to life imprisonment, marking a significant development in the long-standing legal battle.
The controversial cleric, who has consistently advocated for non-kinetic approaches to resolving Nigeria's security challenges, emphasized that Kanu's change of attitude must precede any advocacy for his release. "This Kanu that was imprisoned for terrorism for agitating that our soldiers should be killed, if this same Kanu now will show remorse and also call for peace, honestly, I will be in the forefront in calling for his pardon and amnesty for him," Gumi stated during the television interview.
Historical Precedents for Amnesty
Sheikh Gumi drew parallels to previous Nigerian leaders who granted amnesty to individuals involved in similar circumstances. He specifically referenced former President Shehu Shagari, who comes from the same town as Gumi, and his decision to grant amnesty to Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, the leader of the defunct Republic of Biafra.
The cleric also pointed to the example set by the late President Umaru Yar'Adua, who implemented an amnesty program for Niger Delta militants who had committed acts of terrorism in the oil-rich region. "Look, Shagari, our president, we are from the same town. Shagari gave amnesty to Ojukwu. Look at Umar Yar'Adua; he gave amnesty to the Niger Delta militants, who have also committed acts of terrorism. So, this is how we are," Gumi explained, highlighting the historical context for his position.
Gumi's Advocacy for Non-Kinetic Solutions
Sheikh Gumi has consistently positioned himself as a proponent of dialogue and non-violent approaches to addressing Nigeria's numerous security challenges, particularly in the northern regions where banditry and kidnapping have become prevalent.
