Kano Gov Yusuf Resigns from NNPP, Joins APC

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf Officially Leaves NNPP for APC

In a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has formally resigned his membership from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP). This move confirms his anticipated defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major shift in the state's political landscape.

Mass Exodus of Political Figures Accompanies Governor's Defection

Governor Yusuf's transition to the APC is not an isolated event. He will be joined by a substantial cohort of political leaders from Kano State, including:

  • 21 state House of Assembly members, notably Speaker Ismail Falgore.
  • Eight federal lawmakers out of the 21 representing the state.
  • 44 local government council chairmen who have also abandoned the NNPP.

This collective departure underscores a widespread realignment within Kano's political sphere, potentially strengthening the APC's foothold in the region.

Governor Cites Internal Party Crises as Primary Reason for Resignation

In his resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, Gwale Local Council, Governor Yusuf officially communicated his decision to withdraw from the party effective Sunday, January 25, 2026. The letter, released by his spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, highlighted deepening internal crises within the NNPP as a key factor.

"I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the NNPP of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026," the governor stated. He expressed appreciation for the party's support since 2022 but pointed to persistent leadership disagreements and legal challenges that have unsettled the party nationwide.

Yusuf Emphasizes Public Interest and State Unity in Decision

Governor Yusuf explained that his resignation followed careful reflection and was guided by the broader interests of Kano State's people. "After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State," he said.

He emphasized that the decision was made in good faith, without bitterness, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and progress in the state. The governor noted that the internal disputes have created deep divisions and weakened cohesion within the NNPP, leading to uncertainty at both state and national levels.

Party Acknowledges Resignation, Praises Governor's Performance

The resignation was acknowledged by Kabiru Zubairu, Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, who commended Governor Yusuf for his laudable projects in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment. "I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party, though we are trying our best to contain it. But we have no option other than to accept the resignation of a one and most performing governor of the NNPP," Zubairu stated.

This development signals a pivotal moment in Nigerian politics, as Kano State, a key political battleground, sees its leadership align with the ruling party, potentially influencing future electoral dynamics and governance strategies in the region.
