Kano People's Rights Alliance Supports Governor Yusuf's Exit from NNPP
The Kano People's Rights Alliance (KPRA) has publicly endorsed the resignation of Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP). The group described this move as a courageous and people-centered decision, emphasizing its alignment with the broader interests of Kano residents.
Internal Conflicts Prompt Resignation
In a statement released on Saturday, KPRA Coordinator, Isyaku Lawal Tofa, highlighted that Governor Yusuf's resignation, effective January 25, 2026, was driven by the deepening internal crises within the NNPP. The governor expressed gratitude to the party for providing him a political platform since 2022, acknowledging the support from its leadership and members. However, persistent internal disputes and legal challenges have severely hampered the party's effectiveness and cohesion.
Isyaku Lawal Tofa stated, "The Governor has articulated the challenges plaguing the NNPP, including leadership disagreements and unresolved legal matters. These issues have weakened the party's structure and fostered disenfranchisement among members, creating an environment of division and uncertainty."
Mass Exodus in Solidarity
The political significance of this development is underscored by a mass exit from the NNPP in Kano State. According to KPRA, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen have resigned in solidarity with Governor Yusuf. This collective action reflects a shared resolve to prioritize public service and effective governance over party allegiance amidst internal turmoil.
The group emphasized that this decision was made after careful reflection, rooted in good faith and a commitment to fostering peace and unity within Kano State, rather than out of bitterness.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
KPRA called on all political stakeholders in Kano State to engage in constructive dialogue and focus on resolving issues that hinder good governance, rather than deepening partisan divisions. "It is essential that the focus remains on the needs and aspirations of the people, rather than on conflicts that undermine collective progress," Tofa added.
The alliance commended Governor Yusuf for his visionary leadership and achievements in areas such as infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment. KPRA reaffirmed its readiness to support the governor in his future political endeavors, viewing his resignation as a necessary step toward building a more responsive and people-oriented political environment in Kano State.
