In a significant festive season intervention, the House of Representatives member for Yagba East, Yagba West, and Mopamuro Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide, has launched a massive distribution of food items and relief materials valued at approximately ₦1 billion. The initiative, aimed at widows and other constituents, is to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.
Annual Gesture Reaches All 34 Wards
The distribution exercise was officially flagged off on Thursday, December 25, 2025. Abejide, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bashiru Abdul Mohammed, stated that the programme is designed to cover all 34 wards and polling units within his constituency. He emphasized that this ensures every resident, especially the vulnerable, has access to food to celebrate with joy.
"This distribution of food items is my usual gesture to our people," Abejide said. "This initiative did not start today; it has been in existence for about nine years." He described the project as part of his consistent annual humanitarian intervention to alleviate hardship, particularly during the festive season.
Details of the Food Items and Community Pledge
The lawmaker listed the specific items earmarked for this year's outreach. The substantial package includes:
- 24,000 bags of 5kg rice
- 10,000 packs of 2kg garri
- 10,000 six-yard wrappers for widows
- Quantities of salt, sugar, and noodles
Abejide explained that his passion for philanthropy and adherence to moral and religious teachings on compassion drive the initiative.
In a related development, the representative used the occasion to announce a major review of a previous community development pledge. He recalled an earlier promise of ₦5 million to each of the 71 autonomous communities in the constituency, which was delayed due to his gubernatorial campaign commitments.
He now assures constituents that by 2026, the pledge will be fulfilled and even doubled. "A total of ₦710 million will be disbursed to support community development projects," Abejide stated, confirming that the sum is now ₦10 million per community.
Ensuring Transparency and Fairness
While formally flagging off the food distribution, Rt. Hon. Leke Abejide charged the officials handling the process with a critical mandate: ensure transparency and fairness. He stressed that the items must reach all designated wards and polling units, with particular attention to widows and other deserving beneficiaries.
This annual event underscores the lawmaker's long-standing commitment to the welfare of his constituents in Kogi State, providing tangible support during a period of celebration and reflection.
