Ebonyi Governor Nwifuru Lauded for Promoting Political Inclusiveness and Harmony
The Chairman of the Elders' Council in Ebonyi State, Engr. Ben Okah, has publicly commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his efforts in fostering inclusiveness and mutual respect among political actors across party lines. Okah highlighted that the governor's approach has significantly contributed to a state of relative calm and political stability throughout Ebonyi.
Encouraging Political Harmony and Opposition Inclusion
In a recent interaction with journalists in Abakaliki, Okah emphasized that the current administration under Governor Nwifuru has actively encouraged political harmony by ensuring that opposition figures are neither intimidated nor marginalized within the political landscape. He expressed strong confidence that this environment will lead to a peaceful and credible electoral process as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Okah pointed out the prevailing political maturity among stakeholders, noting a distinct lack of tension across Ebonyi despite the approaching election season. He described the current atmosphere as markedly more tranquil compared to previous election cycles, which were often characterized by heightened rivalry and conflict.
Testing Peace and Maturity in Ebonyi
"This is the time to test how peaceful and mature we are as a state. From what is on ground, there is no tension. People are going about their normal activities without fear," Okah stated. He further elaborated that Governor Nwifuru's stance against imposing candidates within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has strengthened internal democracy, setting a positive example likely to influence other political parties in the region.
"When the dominant party allows a free and fair process, it sends a signal to others. That alone reduces friction and builds confidence in the system," he added, underscoring the importance of such practices in maintaining electoral integrity.
Contrast with Past Election Periods
Okah contrasted the current peaceful climate with past election periods, which were often marked by serious confrontations, verbal attacks, and intense political rivalries. He observed that such negative developments are largely absent today, attributing this change to increased restraint and orderliness among political leaders.
"In previous times, by now you would have seen serious confrontations and unhealthy exchanges. But today, there is restraint and orderliness," he remarked, highlighting the progress made under Governor Nwifuru's leadership.
Calls for Sustained Peace and Vigilance
The Elders' Council chairman urged all political actors and their supporters to sustain the prevailing peace by conducting campaigns responsibly and adhering to democratic principles. He also called on security agencies and electoral bodies to remain vigilant to ensure a credible and transparent electoral process.
Okah expressed optimism that maintaining this peaceful environment would boost voter participation and further strengthen democratic governance in Ebonyi State. "We expect a process that is free, fair, and acceptable to all. Ebonyi has shown that elections can be conducted without violence, and we must build on that," he concluded, reinforcing the state's commitment to peaceful democratic practices.
