Speaker Ogundoyin Urges National Peace Plan Amid Security Crisis
Ogundoyin calls for national peace framework

The Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Adebo Ogundoyin, has issued a powerful call for the immediate creation and implementation of a comprehensive national peace plan to tackle Nigeria's escalating security crisis.

Urgent Appeal for National Unity

Speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the 19th International Conference of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker expressed grave concerns about the worsening security situation across the country. The event took place at the prestigious University of Ibadan, bringing together experts and stakeholders in peacebuilding.

Ogundoyin emphasized that the surge in kidnapping, banditry, and communal violence represents a direct threat to national development. He stated clearly that without establishing genuine peace, Nigeria's progress remains uncertain and distant.

Beyond Politics: A Collective Responsibility

The prominent lawmaker stressed that addressing security challenges must transcend political affiliations, ethnic backgrounds, and religious differences. He called on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, faith-based organizations, and civil society groups, to unite in protecting the nation's peace and stability.

Ogundoyin specifically praised Oyo State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde for hosting the Southwest Governors' Forum in Ibadan just one day earlier, where insecurity dominated discussions. This regional collaboration demonstrates the growing recognition of the security emergency.

Direct Appeal to Presidential Leadership

In his most significant statement, Speaker Ogundoyin made a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt more strategic and community-focused approaches to peacebuilding. He emphasized the critical need for enhanced security architecture and better intelligence gathering capabilities.

"On behalf of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, I use this platform to appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explore more robust and strategic approaches to entrenching lasting peace across the country," Ogundoyin declared during his keynote address.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between federal and state governments while acknowledging the valuable contributions of international organizations like the United Nations, ECOWAS, and the African Union in promoting peace.

The conference chairman also expressed optimism about potential partnership between Nigerian legislators and the Society for Peace Studies and Practice in developing laws and policies that encourage stability and conflict prevention.

"As lawmakers, we are ready to provide legislative support for peace initiatives that foster sustainable development and national unity," Ogundoyin affirmed, signaling concrete political commitment to addressing the security challenges facing the nation.
