PAACA Endorses Tinubu's Ambassador Nomination for Ex-INEC Boss Yakubu
PAACA Backs Yakubu's Ambassador Nomination

The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's decision to nominate the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as a non-career ambassador.

PAACA Praises Yakubu's Record and Dismisses Critics

In a statement released from Abuja on December 2, 2025, PAACA's Executive Director, Ezenwa Nwagwu, described the presidential choice as "well considered." The organisation highlighted Yakubu's extensive public service background and profound grasp of democratic governance, arguing these qualities would significantly boost Nigeria's diplomatic efforts overseas.

PAACA pointed to the former INEC chief's "remarkable commitment to institutional reforms, transparency and responsible stewardship" during his tenure. Nwagwu emphasised that Professor Yakubu successfully navigated the electoral body through some of Nigeria's most challenging election cycles, making him a valuable asset for the country's international engagements.

Addressing Ethical Concerns and Political Speculation

The advocacy group acknowledged that the nomination has faced criticism from some quarters, with detractors suggesting it followed too quickly after his INEC role and raised potential ethical questions. PAACA firmly labelled these concerns as "misplaced," attributing them to a narrow reading of democratic standards.

Nwagwu clarified the legal standing, noting that the law does not prohibit former INEC leaders from accepting appointments after their term. He explained that a previous clause in the INEC Act requiring a five-year hiatus applied only to running for elective office and was repealed by the National Assembly back in 2010.

The group urged Nigerians to evaluate the nomination based on national interest rather than political narratives. "Ambassadors serve as representatives of the Nigerian people, not of any administration," Nwagwu stated. He stressed that competence, credibility, and the ability to promote a positive image are paramount, qualities he believes Yakubu has shown over decades.

A Call for Swift Senate Confirmation

PAACA lauded Yakubu's service record under four successive presidents—Umaru Yar'Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and Bola Tinubu. It specifically cited his reformative work at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and his leadership at INEC, which it said oversaw highly competitive polls.

Beyond his administrative roles, the organisation highlighted Yakubu's standing as a distinguished academic and scholar, whose training and global perspective drove innovations in both education and electoral systems.

Concluding its statement, PAACA called on the Nigerian Senate to expedite the confirmation process for Professor Yakubu. It also urged the nominee to leverage his new role to proactively advance the nation's diplomatic interests on the global stage.
