The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has publicly celebrated the conferment of a significant Yoruba chieftaincy title on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A Cultural Honour for Service and Leadership
Ambassador Belusochukwu Enwere, the National President of YOWICAN, extended warm congratulations to Seyi Tinubu on his installation as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland. The title was bestowed by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, in a grand ceremony held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the Alaafin's palace in Oyo town.
In a statement released to the press, Enwere characterized the event as a major cultural recognition. He stated it reflects an appreciation for leadership, dedicated service, and a commitment to advancing society. The ceremony, which drew traditional rulers, political figures, and guests from Nigeria and abroad, also saw former Zamfara State governor, Abdulaziz Yari, installed as the Obaloyin of Yorubaland.
Bridging Generations and Upholding Heritage
Enwere emphasized that the Alaafin's decision to honour Seyi Tinubu is deeply symbolic. He noted it comes at a time when Nigeria needs strong bridges of understanding across different age groups, faiths, and ethnicities. "This installation is not just a personal honour but a call to greater responsibility and service to humanity," the YOWICAN leader said.
He praised Oba Abimbola Owoade for preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people and for using traditional institutions to promote values like integrity and leadership among the youth. According to Enwere, such actions help strengthen the vital connection between contemporary governance and Nigeria's enduring traditional systems.
A Platform for Youth Empowerment and National Unity
The YOWICAN President highlighted Seyi Tinubu's increasing involvement in philanthropy and social development initiatives focused on young people. He described him as a young Nigerian whose influence extends beyond his political family background.
"As youths, we see this honour as an opportunity for renewed engagement," Enwere added. "It is our hope that the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland will further inspire Seyi Tinubu to champion causes that promote youth empowerment, peaceful coexistence, and national development."
Enwere also stressed the importance of interfaith harmony and national cohesion. He expressed his belief that recognitions of this nature should serve as a platform for fostering unity across religious and ethnic lines. He assured that YOWICAN remains dedicated to supporting efforts that encourage responsible leadership and inclusive development for the young Nigerians who will shape the country's future.
Concluding his message, Ambassador Enwere wished Seyi Tinubu a successful and impactful tenure in his new role. He prayed for the wisdom, humility, and strength needed to uphold the esteemed values associated with the title of Okanlomo.
The installation has sparked widespread reactions within political, cultural, and youth circles across Nigeria. Many observers see it as a meaningful fusion of tradition and modern leadership symbolism within the nation's evolving socio-political landscape.
