Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has praised President Bola Tinubu for demonstrating commitment to the reconstruction of the South-east, saying the president is healing the wounds of the Nigerian civil war that lasted from 1967 to 1970.
Soludo lauds Tinubu's infrastructure push
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Soludo stated that President Tinubu has a date with history, particularly regarding the South-east. He said Tinubu continues to show his avowed commitment to orchestrating the reconstruction of the region, thereby finally healing the wounds of the civil war.
The governor explained that his latest praise stemmed from a message he received from the Presidency on Wednesday, confirming that Tinubu had approved two federal roads in Anambra for design and procurement.
Two major roads approved for dualisation
Soludo revealed that one of the approved roads is the Otuocha–Anam–Abaji road, which connects Anambra to Kogi State and spans about 108 kilometres. The second road, approximately 150 kilometres, is the Oba–Nnewi–Uga–Ihube road, which links Anambra to Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Port Harcourt. Both roads are marked for dualisation.
According to the governor, he met with President Tinubu on 1 July to discuss these roads. The following day, Minister of Works Dave Umahi contacted him to request the road details, which Soludo forwarded on 3 July. On 15 July, he received a message from the Ministry of Works that the president had graciously approved both roads for design and procurement.
Soludo described these roads as critical game-changers for the South-east, South-south, and North-central regions.
Tinubu redefining politics in Nigeria
Soludo argued that Tinubu is redefining politics in Nigeria through his infrastructural development projects in the South-east. He noted that several unprecedented, foundational infrastructural rebirths are currently ongoing in the region.
“For me personally, this is why politics makes sense to me—working collaboratively and building alliances to achieve concrete results that improve the lives of the people,” Soludo said.
Political alliance between APGA and APC
Soludo is a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), under which he won re-election in 2025. Despite this, he has consistently expressed support for President Tinubu's re-election bid, even though Tinubu belongs to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Soludo has been openly campaigning for the president, often stressing that “the progressives are working together” to indicate a harmonious relationship between APGA and APC.
Background on the Nigerian civil war
The South-east has long agitated for secession from Nigeria over alleged marginalisation. In 1967, the then-Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria, Odumegwu Ojukwu, declared the independence of the region as the Biafra Republic, citing marginalisation and mass killings of Easterners in the northern part of the country. The Nigerian military government under Yakubu Gowon challenged the declaration, leading to a bloody three-year civil war that resulted in the deaths of about 3 million people, mainly from Eastern Nigeria.
